Why do we make boardbags?
After a long career in hospitality, brought to a sudden and grinding halt by serious illness, Steve had time on his hands, and a lot on his mind.
As a surfer of some 30+ years, an open ocean swimmer, scuba diver, keen marine conservation activist, and someone who had travelled the world extensively, the need to “do something” about the increasing amount of waste around us became overwhelming.
Especially as a new dad (and already step-dad) at 48, just putting food on plates and drinks in hands, even in an award-winning way, just didn’t seem enough anymore.
He’d always noted that advertising banners were just everywhere, including the store rooms of every pub, bar or restaurant he’d ever run, and he also knew that they can’t be re-printed after use. Once it became clear that they also cannot be recycled like most other plastics, it just seemed essential to find another use for them. And that thinking led to looking around some more at what materials there are in our world. …and Oh. My. Word….. hot tub covers, swimming pool covers, truckside curtains, tents discarded after often just one use, kites, sails, parachutes, furniture packaging, wasted underfloor insulation. On, and on, and on..
As surfers, we all have old bags with broken zips in our garages and sheds, and they too, once ready to be discarded, have nowhere else to go than, yup, you guessed it; into the ground. Gross.
And that’s where Slidehustle started.
A chat with a good friend, a high level sustainability exec in the surf and outdoor space cemented the idea, and Slidehustle bags started to be pieced together.
We’re right at the beginning of the ‘journey’, as the hackneyed phrase goes, but there are ambitions in Slidehustle, and we really hope you’re as keen as we are to see what happens next.
We don’t make new boardbags. Just better boardbags.
Let’s go.
